To start off with, we will show you one way of understanding how addiction to substances develops. This is an adaptation of several different models and approaches, put together by the Amplify! team to fit with the people who we work with.
These models and approaches include:
- Dr Peter Adams' Addictive Systems model
- Te Whare Tapa Wha model
- Fonofale model
- Positive youth development research, which is strongly
aligned with the Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa - Transtheoretical stages of change
The practitioners work together with young people to help them to:
- Strengthen their existing connections
- Introduce and strengthen new connections
- Learn and practice new skills to reduce connection to the addictive substance
